Now that we've seen how vowels and nasal resonance can enhance our voice, let's explore it further.

1. When we sing or speak different vowels, the shape of our mouth and the position of our tongue change, which affects how the sound resonates in our nasal cavity.
2. For example, when we sing an "ee" vowel, our mouth is more closed and our tongue is higher in our mouth, which can make the sound resonate more in the upper part of our nasal cavity.
3. On the other hand, when we sing an "ah" vowel, our mouth is more open and our tongue is lower, which can make the sound resonate more in the lower part of our nasal cavity.
4. By experimenting with different vowels and focusing on how they resonate in our nasal channels, we can discover new ways to color our voice and express ourselves more dynamically.

Instructions:

Before we start, let's record a vocal reference so that we can compare the quality of your voice now with it at the end of the lesson.

Let's pretend you are hired as the professional voice talent for a fictional audiobook.

Here is your paragraph.

"In the quiet evening, the small waves gently talked to the sandy beach. Each word was clear and floated easily through the cool air. As I listened, the soft sounds of the waves mixed with the whispering leaves, making a beautiful song that made me feel calm and happy about the world around us."

Let's say it a couple more times and listen to how your voice resonates.

What kind of action is involved if you decide to say it louder?
What changes in your torso, breathing, face?
How loud can you get without straining?
And how would you know if you're straining?

Now, observe what is involved in saying it really quietly.
What happens to your breath?
What happens to the muscles of your throat, your jaw, your face?

Notice if the sounds flow smoothly together or if they're a bit disconnected and choppy.
What is the connection between the flow of the breath and the flow of the sounds?

Pay attention to the relationship between the amount of air that you store in your lungs and the requirement of speaking out the entire paragraph.

Don't worry if you can't find the answers right now.
What's important is that you look for the answers.

Record yourself on a phone or computer saying this paragraph and once you're done lets begin the lesson.

1. Find a comfortable standing position.

2. Close your right nostril with your right hand and breathe in and out through the left nasal channels.

3. While exhaling, start humming and vary the pitch of your voice like an old-fashioned siren.

As you hum and vary the pitch, notice how the resonance in your left nasal channels changes. Pay attention to the vibrations and sensations in your face and head.

4. Notice how the left nasal channels resonate with your voice.

5. Repeat the humming for two or three exhalations.

6. Close your left nostril with your left hand and breathe in through the right nasal channels.

7. Hum while exhaling, raising and lowering the pitch of your voice.

8. Observe the resonance in the right nasal channels.

9. Alternate closing each nostril and compare the resonance on each side of your face.

10. Walk around briefly to rest.

11. Stand comfortably again and breathe in and out through your nose, using all six nasal channels.

12. While exhaling, make an ‘M’ sound and vary your voice pitch.

13. Find a way to use all six nasal channels as resonators for your voice.

14. Hum on a comfortable pitch and then open up on a vowel ‘ah’ before the end of your breath.

As you transition from humming to the ‘ah’ vowel, observe any shifts in resonance. Notice how the vowel sound interacts with your nasal channels.

15. Notice any changes in resonance when switching to the vowel sound.

16. Next, focus on using the two lower nasal channels as resonators while humming and opening on ‘ah’.

17. Then, focus on using the two top channels, possibly raising the pitch of your voice.

18. Switch to vocalizing on ‘me’ instead of ‘ah’ and try to use the top channels as main resonators.

19. Come back to vocalizing on ‘me’, but focus on using the middle channels as resonators.

20. Eventually, vocalize on ‘me’ using all six nasal channels.

21. Observe how you color the vowel, the position of your head, and the organization of your soft palate and tongue.

22. Play with different pitches and volumes of your voice.

23. Walk around to rest.

24. Stand comfortably again and hum, then open up on an ‘e’ sound, focusing on the top two channels.

25. Continue humming and opening on an ‘e’ vowel, but now select the two lowest nasal channels.

As you explore different vowel sounds and nasal channels, pay attention to the subtle changes in resonance and the sensations in your face and head. Notice how your vocal apparatus adjusts to create these variations.

26. See if it’s possible to select the middle channels.

27. Finally, find a way to use all six channels as resonators for both humming and ‘e’ sound.

28. Observe the changes in vowel coloration, head position, and organization of the soft palate and tongue.

29. Experiment with varying pitches and volumes.

Discussion Questions

These questions can be asked during the activity or at the conclusion.

  1. Do you notice any changes in resonance when using different nasal channels?
  2. Can you feel the difference in vibrations in and around your nose and face?
  3. How does the resonance compare when switching from one side to the other?
  4. Do you notice any new sensations in your face after humming through different channels?
  5. How do different vowel sounds interact with your nasal resonance?
  6. What adjustments do you make in your vocal apparatus to create variations in vowel sound and resonance?

Remember the audio recording we did before the start of the lesson?

Here is the paragraph again.

"In the quiet evening, the small waves gently talked to the sandy beach. Each word was clear and floated easily through the cool air. As I listened, the soft sounds of the waves mixed with the whispering leaves, making a beautiful song that made me feel calm and happy about the world around us."

Recite it a few times in a standing position. Pay attention to flow of breath and how whether or not the sounds are smoother and more effortless.

Play around with volumes and go over the questions review the questions you might not have had the answers to before the first time.

Finally, record yourself saying the paragraph and once you're done, compare the quality of your voice now relative to the quality you had before doing this lesson.
