The Greenville Community Center is preparing to open their outdoor pool for the summer. Maya and Jamal are responsible for filling the pool using buckets.
Maya can carry a bucket with 6 liters of water, while Jamal can carry a bucket with 5 liters of water.
They each take the same amount of time to fill their bucket, carry it to the pool, empty it, and return to the water source.
(a) If they each make as many trips as they can, how many liters of water have Maya and Jamal poured into the pool after making 15 trips each?
(b) The pool needs 1000 liters of water to be filled. How many trips from the water source to the pool do they have to make in order to fill the pool completely?
(c) It takes approximately 45 seconds for Maya and Jamal to fill a bucket, carry it to the pool, empty it, and return to the water source. Approximately how many minutes does it take them to fill the pool completely?
(d) On the last trip, Maya and Jamal carry the same amount of water. If they each carry as much water as they can on their earlier trips, how many liters do they each carry on the last trip?
(a) In one trip:
Maya carries 6 liters
Jamal carries 5 liters
Total per trip: 6 + 5 = 11 liters
After 15 trips:
11 liters × 15 = 165 liters
Therefore, Maya and Jamal have poured 165 liters into the pool after 15 trips each.
(b) To find how many trips it takes to fill the pool:
1000 ÷ 11 = 90 remainder 10
This means it will take 91 trips to fill the pool completely.
(c) Time calculation:
91 trips × 45 seconds = 4095 seconds
4095 seconds ÷ 60 = 68.25 minutes
Therefore, it takes approximately 68 minutes and 15 seconds to fill the pool.
(d) After 90 trips:
90 × 11 = 990 liters have been poured
Remaining water needed: 1000 – 990 = 10 liters
On the last trip, Maya and Jamal each carry 5 liters.
