Maple Grove is planning to build a small community center with four rooms: a meeting room, an activity room, a storage room, and a kitchenette. The plans for the building are shown below, with all rooms being rectangular. However, some measurements are missing.
The architect provided the following additional information:
(a) What are the missing dimensions of the activity room and the kitchenette?
(b) What is the total floor area of the four rooms in the community center?
(a) Missing dimensions:
– Activity room length: The storage room width is 3 m, so the activity room length is 2 × 3 = 6 m.
– Kitchenette width: The meeting room length is 9 m, so the kitchenette width is 9 ÷ 3 = 3 m.
(b) Total floor area:
Method 1: Calculate each room’s area individually
– Meeting room: 9 m × 5 m = 45 m²
– Activity room: 6 m × 5 m = 30 m²
– Storage room: 4 m × 3 m = 12 m²
– Kitchenette: 6 m × 3 m = 18 m²
Total area: 45 + 30 + 12 + 18 = 105 m²
Method 2: Calculate the area of the entire rectangle and subtract the unused space
– Entire rectangle: (9 m + 6 m) × (5 m + 3 m) = 15 m × 8 m = 120 m²
– Unused space: 3 m × 5 m = 15 m²
– Total area: 120 m² – 15 m² = 105 m²
Therefore, the total floor area of the community center is 105 square meters.
