Laying the Foundation: Elementary and Inspectional Reading

As parents, we all want our children to develop a love for reading and strong comprehension skills from an early age. This lifelong gift begins with an intentional introduction to reading during the elementary years.

Elementary reading should be the first style children are taught. These formative years provide an opportune window for establishing the basics and initial skills that will serve as a sturdy foundation for more advanced reading abilities later on.

During this stage, focus on fostering an enjoyment of books and stories. Read aloud to your children regularly, using Expression and inviting them to follow along. Guide them through sounding out words phonetically and recognizing sight words. Be patient, provide encouragement, and celebrate each milestone of progress. The goal is to build confidence and positive associations with the act of reading itself.

As your child’s skills develop, you can begin layering in the concept of inspectional reading.

Inspectional reading equips children with vital skills like focusing their attention, discerning important versus secondary details, and efficiently extracting key insights from lengthier texts. As their comprehension abilities mature, inspectional techniques will empower deeper reading and analysis down the line.

This style emphasizes gaining a broad overview and understanding of a book’s core elements within a relatively short timeframe.

There are two key steps:

  1. Systematic Skimming
With your guidance, teach your child the practice of rapid skimming. This involves quickly reviewing the table of contents, chapter titles and subtitles, intro and conclusion sections, and any other visual aids like charts or diagrams. The aim is to grasp the book’s primary themes and overall structure.
  2. Superficial Reading
Next is a slightly more thorough but still swift reading pass to understand the general gist of the content. Encourage your child to read the introduction and conclusion sections more carefully, while skimming the body chapters. Have them pause periodically to articulate the key points and primary arguments.

These two reading styles – elementary reading for establishing basics, and inspectional for gaining broad overviews – provide an ideal pedagogical progression. By beginning with this strong skill foundation, you set your child up for long-term reading success.
