Back to Trailhead Missions
Garrett wants to build some wooden planters to grow vegetables in his garden. He has all the supplies and is ready to start building.
There are three steps to build one planter:
Step 1: Cut the wood pieces. This takes 20 minutes.
Step 2: Assemble the planter box. This takes 30 minutes.
Step 3: Paint the planter. This takes 25 minutes.
a) How long does it take Garrett to build one planter from start to finish?
b) Garrett wants to build three planters. He starts making each new planter immediately after finishing the previous one. If he needs to be done by 2:30 pm to go to his friend’s house, what is the latest time he can start building the first planter?
a) The total time to build one planter is 20 + 30 + 25 = 75 minutes, or 1 hour and 15 minutes.
b) Since Garrett completely finishes building each planter before starting the next one, it will take three times as long to build three planters. This means it will take 75 × 3 = 225 minutes, or 3 hours and 45 minutes.
To determine the latest time Garrett can start, we count backwards 225 minutes from 2:30 pm:
– 1 hour before 2:30 pm is 1:30 pm
– 2 hours before 1:30 pm is 11:30 am
– 45 minutes before 11:30 am is 10:45 am
Therefore, the latest Garrett can start building the first planter is 10:45 am.
