Back to Mind Explorers
This lesson helps children explore the nature of their own awareness and consciousness.
By asking questions about whether it’s possible to not be aware, children develop a deeper understanding of how their minds work and the ever-present nature of awareness.
This activity encourages self-reflection, introspection, and a greater appreciation for the mysterious and fascinating aspects of the human mind.
Hey there, curious explorer!
Today, we're going to play a game called "The Awareness Experiment."
We'll be asking some interesting questions about how our minds work and whether it's possible to not be aware.
This game will help us understand more about our own awareness and how it happens.
Are you ready to dive in and explore?
1. Have the child sit comfortably in a quiet space.
2. Ask the child to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths.
3. Pose the first question: “Is it possible to not be aware of anything?” Encourage the child to think about this question and explore their own experience. Can they find a moment when they are not aware of anything at all?
4. Next, ask the child: “Do you need to actively choose to be aware, or does awareness happen on its own?” Have them consider whether they have to put in effort to be aware or if awareness is always present.
5. Finally, ask the child: “Are you ever not aware?” Encourage them to think about whether there are any moments when they are completely unaware, even during sleep or daydreaming.
6. Allow the child to sit with these questions for a few moments, exploring their own experience of awareness.
7. After a few minutes, ask the child to open their eyes and share their thoughts and discoveries.
To further explore the concept of awareness and consciousness, consider introducing your child to the book “The Little Soul and the Sun” by Neale Donald Walsch.

Verse 1:
Can you find a moment when nothing’s there?
A space in your mind that’s totally bare?
Close your eyes, take a deep breath in
Where does awareness begin?
Pre-Chorus:
Is it a choice we make?
Or does it just appear?
These questions we ask
As we draw awareness near
Chorus:
Always aware, even when we sleep
Consciousness flowing, a river so deep
In every moment, awake or in dreams
We’re always aware, or so it seems
Verse 2:
Think about thinking, feel about feeling
Is there ever a time when awareness isn’t revealing?
Even in silence, even in noise
Awareness is there, without our voice
(Pre-Chorus)
(Chorus)
Bridge:
In daydreams and nightdreams
In laughter and in tears
Awareness is constant
Throughout all our years
(Chorus)
Outro:
Open your eyes, what do you see?
A world of wonders, eternally
Always aware, that’s who we are
Shining bright like a distant star
