Instructions for the teacher:

1. Have the students sit in a circle and select the first person to be the “serious person” for this round of the challenge. Explain that this person’s job is to try to keep a straight face and serious expression, no matter what funny faces or silly actions the rest of the group does.

2. To the serious person, emphasize that their mission is to resist laughing, smiling, or cracking a grin. They must use their inner strength and focus to keep a straight face, even when faced with the most ridiculous and absurd non-verbal antics from their classmates.

3. Remind the serious person that they cannot simply look down or ignore the others to avoid laughing. They must stay present and engaged, looking at their classmates directly and fully experiencing whatever silly faces, gestures, or energy they send their way.

4. To the rest of the group, explain that their mission is to break through the serious person’s defenses and make them laugh or smile, using only funny faces, gestures, or body language. Remind them that they must remain completely silent throughout the process.

5. As the students take turns making funny faces, striking silly poses, or channeling their inner goofball, remind them that the goal is not to force the serious person to laugh, but rather to invite them to let go and join in the spirit of play. Encourage them to trust that their genuine joy and creativity will be enough to crack even the toughest of exteriors.

6. To the serious person, as they face this onslaught of non-verbal hilarity, remind them to take deep breaths, focus their mind, and stay centered. Encourage them to find a way to appreciate the humor and creativity of their classmates without losing their composure.

7. The challenge will continue until either the serious person laughs or smiles, or the rest of the group runs out of funny ideas. Either way, the process is sure to be filled with laughter, joy, and a newfound appreciation for the power of non-verbal communication and the resilience of the human spirit.

8. Once the challenge has concluded, the role of the serious person will pass to the next student in the circle, and the process will begin again. Each person will have the opportunity to test their skills as the serious person and to join in the fun of trying to break through their defenses with laughter and play.

9. As the challenge continues around the circle, invite the students to reflect on the incredible energy and creativity being unleashed. Highlight how the simple act of trying to make each other laugh without words has tapped into a deep well of joy, connection, and aliveness that is often hidden beneath the surface of our daily lives.

10. Reinforce that this game is not just about the challenge of making each other laugh, but about the deeper invitation to let go of our seriousness and embrace our lighter, more playful side. It is a reminder that even when life feels challenging, there is always room for laughter, joy, and the simple delight of being alive and connected to others.

Song: Laugh Without Words

Verse 1:
Straight-faced warrior, stand your ground
While silly faces dance around
No words allowed, just pure delight
Can you hold on with all your might?

Pre-Chorus:
Gestures wild and eyes so bright
Trying to crack that serious sight

Chorus:
Laugh without words, let joy break free
Silently shouting, “Come laugh with me!”
Funny faces, crazy moves
Our connection only proves
That laughter’s language has no need
For words to plant its joyful seed

Verse 2:
Breathing deep to keep compose
While friends make faces, strike a pose
The challenge builds, who’ll win this game?
Serious or silly, we’re not the same

(Pre-Chorus)
(Chorus)

Bridge:
In silence, we communicate
Laughter’s power, we demonstrate
Breaking barriers, healing hearts
This wordless joy, a work of art

(Chorus)

Outro:
As giggles fade and smiles remain
We’ve found a truth we can’t explain
Laughter binds us, sets us free
In silent joy, community
